Best Sausage Stuffer Reviews

Best Sausage Stuffer Reviews

Starting to get serious about making sausages? Looking to cure your own, try different cures, or make the most of the wild game you bring home from a hunt? Sausage stuffers make the process much easier and more efficient. In our best sausage stuffer review, we found some quality choices that should fit a variety of use cases, from the home hobbyist to serious charcuterie enthusiast.

We chose the best ones based on quality, durability, capacity, and value. What’s great is that there are quite a few outstanding products in this category, so you can be assured of finding one that fits your needs.

Budget

In this sausage stuffer review, we considered a variety of models best suited for non-commercial users. High end stuffers can cost upwards of $800. We figured, unless you’re a restaurant or your feeding an army, you’re most likely looking for something you can have for less than a few hundred dollars. And there are some great selections in this range.

Manual Vs. Electric Sausage Stuffers

In the manual versus electric sausage stuffer debate, many electric machines get screened out because of the criteria above. Heavy duty electric sausage stuffers are often pricier. For the at-home user, this doesn’t mean that an electric sausage stuffer is out of reach. But usually, these items are a combination grinder and stuffer, which can be interchanged with accessory parts.

Multi-purpose tools aren’t a bad thing, but we found that it usually meant a smaller capacity when it comes to electric stuffers that are under several hundred dollars. Quality manual stuffers, on the other hand, have a larger capacity built in for the price.

There are electric and hydraulic versions that can replace the handle mechanics of manual stuffers, essentially giving you an electric stuffer with a manual stuffer capacity. However, these are best for commercial use, and add hundreds of dollars to the price of a sausage stuffer.

Here’s a top quality LEM stuffer with an electric motor. Price? $649, but with that, you get a 20 lb capacity. With an electric motor doing the difficult work, why not stuff more sausages?

Construction & Durability

The best sausage stuffers are built with mainly stainless steel or similar quality metal components. We especially feel that this is necessary for the gears and handle levers, although not necessarily the handles themselves. The main body and moving parts need to be built with strong materials to withstand the torque of forcing the meat into casings. This also adds weight to the machine. While most top quality stuffers have bolt holes, not everyone is going to want to permanently put down their meat stuffer somewhere, or would want to deal with taking it down after each use. The extra weight makes it easier to handle sausage stuffing with just one person.

Capacity

Some stuffers only have a tray or small opening to fill with meat. You’ll find these in budget electric stuffers, old school manual stuffers, and stuffer attachments to mixing or grinding machines. To use them, you place the meat through a small tube and press the meat down. The seriously limits the ability to fill casings quickly and efficiently.

The manual stuffers that fit our budget criteria can be found with 7 to 25 lb capacities, which we find to be more than adequate for most users.

Cleaning & Maintaining

Any piece that touches meat needs to be cleaned. For most devices, this means the tray or body cylinder, pistons, and stuffing tubes. Generally, these parts are hand wash only, although some accessories are dishwasher safe. We looked for sausage stuffers that were easy to take apart for cleaning and maintenance.

Warranty

Look for sausage stuffers with a minimum one-year warranty. All the best sausage stuffer brands we reviewed included this, although you should check each manufacturer specifically to see what they offer.

Speed

Some sausage stuffers come with two speed options. The two speed design is meant to allow you to move the piston quickly for filling the cylinder with meat. The low speed option is for stuffing casings. We found these mostly in the larger capacity stuffers, generally above 10 lbs, but it’s definitely an option worth considering if you’re working through a large batch.

Our Top Choice For Best Sausage Stuffer For Home Use

LEM Sausage Stuffer Review

LEM 5 lb Stainless Steel Vertical Sausage Stuffer

This unit is universally lauded, with near perfect reviews on Amazon and multiple top lists. It’s solid, comes from a reputable company, is easy to use and clean, and quality construction. For all that, you can’t beat it’s price. It’s MSRP is 154.99, but you can find it currently around $110 on Amazon. We especially like that all the gears are metal. Similar sausage stuffers in this price range often have a combination of plastic and metal gears. While we still found some of these stuffers to be well reviewed, any complaints usually centered around the breakdown of these parts or a generally cheaper feel. You can see the LEM sausage stuffer in action below:

The Rest Of Our Recommended Sausage Stuffers

While the LEM Sausage Stuffer was our top choice, there are several highly recommended options available. Any of the devices below met our criteria for quality construction, value, and dependability. The choice will come down to your personal needs and desires for size, functionality, and aesthetics.

Sportsman MHVSS 11-Pound Sausage Stuffer

Sportsman MVHSS 11 lb Sausage Stuffer

The Sportsman MVHSS comes with a two speed design. Its build construction is comparable to the LEM 5 lb stuffer we reviewed, but its larger capacity comes at a higher cost, around $192. However, if you’re looking to process more meat, this is a fine choice. Check out the full specs for the Sportsman 11 lb Sausage Stuffer.

Weston Sausage Stuffer Review

Weston Manual Sausage Stuffer

Weston’s upright canister has a 7 lb capacity with heavy duty dual speed gears, a nice addition in this price range. We liked it’s quality build and rubber feet that adds stability while using it. This translates to a price of $145 at our last check, which isn’t the cheapest of the bunch. We also found issue with the extended angle stuffing tube, which made for difficult cleaning. Fortunately, the Weston is easy to take apart. Still, the angled tube meant that some meat was often left over, even when the piston was wound down all the way to the bottom. Those minor annoyances aside, the Weston makes our list for its extra capacity and features like the dual speed gears that our top choice LEM above lacks. Best Looking Quality Sausage Stuffer

VIVO Sausage Stuffer Vertical Stainless Steel

VIVO Sausage Stuffer

The jury is still out on this pick, but the Vivo is pretty dang gorgeous. There aren’t a whole lot of reviews on it, so for these reasons we weren’t comfortable giving it our top spot. What we found in our research is that many people are happy purchasing it. It comes with quality metal gears, a stable metal base, and an 11 lb capacity. We were impressed with the construction quality, overall. What we’re waiting on is finding out more about its build consistency. We found complaints about misaligned gears, although those were replaced quickly by the company. It also has a 7 lb and 22 lb version, although there was even less information on those. If you’re going to be showing off what you’ve got, you’ll impress with the Vivo. Find out more about the Vivo line here.

The Pros And Cons Of KitchenAid Sausage Stuffer Accessories

KitchenAid Stainless Steel Sausage Stuffer Attachment

KitchenAid Mixer Sausage Stuffer Attachment & Accessories

KitchenAid makes fine products. And the reviews of its sausage stuffer attachments are generally favorable. However, if you’re looking to do any serious sausage making, you’ll probably want to get a standalone unit. The attachments come in metal or plastic, although we recommend the stainless steel option. That option above is pricey at around $159, but it allows you to save space with one device and it’s dishwasher safe. It includes attachments for grinding meats, as well.

The biggest problem we had is that the sausages would come out inconsistent and slowly, even when handled by experienced chefs. If you only make sausages once a year, then go ahead and go for the attachments.

Add-ons

If you get a sausage stuffer, you’re going to need casings. Check out our sausage casings guide for a break down of all your choices and our recommendations. You may also want to look at different stuffing tube sizes to add as accessories.

Conclusion

We love the LEM Stainless Steel 5 lb manual sausage stuffer. Critics and customers agree. But that doesn’t mean you’re limited in your options.

There are a variety of good sausage stuffer selections that meet the needs of just about any user. Your choice will come down to regularity of use, what you’re currently have, capacity needs, aesthetics, and budget.
